Mary has been married for 54 years to the love of her life and has two wonderful children happily married each giving them two grandchildren. She has been retired for two years and spends her free time serving in volunteer activities. When Mary and I spoke about attending our classes, she told me about her complete shoulder replacement (a sketch of her procedure is shown below.) Her doctor had advised her 15 years ago to never lift anything over 8 pounds. As a trainer I thought this is good advice when healing, but certainly not feasible for the long term. I invited her to come try our Solid Gold class and see what she could do, paying close attention to the shoulder to make sure it was feeling OK through the movements. At the time of this post, Mary has recently bench pressed 50 pounds and deadlifted 65 pounds and is ecstatic about both feats. She also attends our YogiMo class to stretch and increase mobility, and modifies any plank holds we do by putting her knees on the mat.
What was your first impression of training at Blue Wave?
Ouch! Looks like a warehouse! Now, I love everything we do and the careful attention the instructor gives to each one of us to make sure we do each exercise with proper form and tailors each exercise to compensate for any injury or problems we may have.
What’s your best memory so far?
I pleasantly surprised myself with how much I could lift.
What would you say to someone who has had a procedure like yours and wants to do begin exercising?
I have talked to many of my friends telling them how impressed I have been with the care and education I have received since coming to Blue Wave. The individualized attention and genuine caring by a professional trainer to reach goals and help keep us in good shape focusing on balance and strength training is an invaluable tool for us to focus on as we age.
What’s your next goal? What are you looking forward to next?
Getting a much better handle on my balance. I’m realizing how important that is as we grow into our sunset years.
