Meet Jean Sutton. Jean has a penchant for learning new things and meeting challenges with enthusiasm. She has been training with Priscilla for over a year with a focus on building upper body strength and learning how to move with better form and efficiency. Here she shares her thoughts on why she keeps coming back.

Introduction

My name is Jean. I’m a 68-year old senior citizen, retired from office administration. Currently, crosstraining is my main activity, and I am learning to build upper body strength and build heart rate endurance, although I love to run too. I have built more endurance overall since I began training, and I’m not just concentrating on my legs. I have learned to use my core and upper body. I enjoy lifting, not just for the sake of lifting, but lifting to put your body in the right position. I wanted the personal attention to learn how to put my body in the right positions, and that’s how I started personal training.

Training brings Healing

After my father’s death, it was very tiring and I needed time to grieve and reflect. But I also realized that if I didn’t get back to doing something for myself, I would never get back to who and what I am. I think emotionally and mentally the whole experience of crosstraining allows me to process life’s events a whole lot better than sitting in a chair and failing into a low mood. Personal training helps me feel like who I am.

Above the Aging Curve

If you want to stay above the aging curve and keep up your bone density, I think you should take a step out to try crosstraining. It equals out the aging curve and helps you maintain your current level. You also feel a sense of an accomplishment no matter what age you are. It feels good to know that your body can do more than you think it can. You also feel a new level of self-confidence within yourself, knowing that you can do new things. For me, it’s for my mind, my body and for self-improvement.

The Highlight

My highlight here at Blue Wave is definitely the deadlift. I’ve always enjoyed doing the exercise, and I was able to deadlift about 15 pounds above my bodyweight. I was excited to accomplish that goal, and I will continue to deadlift to see if I can meet that weight again and again. (see Jean lift in the video below)

The Future

Next, I want more shoulder mobility. That’s my long term goal. My short term goal is to climb the rope all the way to the top. I’m half way there, but I want to go all the way. It’s a challenge for me, but it’s also fun and hopefully it won’t take too long to accomplish. Otherwise, I love the variety and meeting all the other people here. It’s very inspiring to see young people and older age people all here working on their fitness.
