In the study of entomology, the process of a pupa changing into an adult has drawn many scientists attention. You might remember studying the life cycle of a butterfly in elementary school and carry fond memories of watching the chrysalis for weeks until one day, the beautiful butterfly emerged and the class set it free.

With the advancements of technology we can now see what happens inside the cocoon.

What scientists discovered is while the caterpillar undergoes a transitional goo phase, not all of it disintegrates. Certain groups of cells called “imaginal discs” maintain their structure and are the blueprints from which each of the adult parts grows and develops during the metamorphosis.

There are parts of the caterpillar that already know what they will become even though it isn’t apparent to the world yet.

I am amazed at the wonder of life and sometimes the parallelism between creation. While the butterfly shows us in a condensed cycle the dramatic transformation from youth to adulthood, we too go through a maturation process, albeit much longer.

Because there are parts of you that are still being developed and while they know what they are, the world has not seen them yet.

And like the pupa, the transformation you are undergoing isn’t the prettiest of processes.

Think of what we do voluntarily:

At the salon in all our foiled glory

The tanning bed with our white raccoon eyes

Swollen and almost unrecognizable recovering from plastic surgery

Even in our bathrooms, taming our bed head and putting on our “face”

We are willing to be quite ugly in order to be pretty.

And becoming fit is no different, so I’m encouraging you today to embrace the process while you’re in your garage, studio or box.

Just like the chrysalis process, we too undergo transformation. And sometimes, it just isn’t pretty. So don’t expect it to be!

Becoming fit takes work. Glorious ugly work and at our gym it normally leaves its impact displayed in pools of sweat, red faces, ruined ponytails and chalked clothes.

It’s the temporary not so pretty impression we accept for the long term beauty.

And if you can accept the short term sacrifice for the long term gain, it can actually be fun.

So, if you’re wrapping up a workout and your make up is smeared, your clothes matted and sweaty, your face a different color- be encouraged! You are on the right track to changing your body and your mind.

Our bodies were meant to move and whether we have “imaginal discs” or not, there is a craving that happens when we are inactive.

So, don’t be embarrassed of this process called fitness, and what you look like after you’ve worked hard. Just remember that in your daily chrysalis you are changing inside and out and emerging as a more beautiful you for people to see.

Keep moving!
