Once upon a time there was a little girl named Olga. Olga was a bright child. She loved adventures and learning new and interesting things. One day while she was walking through the busy city with her aunt, something caught her eye from a department store window.

It was a pair of white sparkly stilettos!

She stared in amazement at their beauty and wondered how she might own a pair.

When she returned home she rushed to her mother and asked if she could have the shoes. “Hmmm…” replied her mother, “those shoes are a little too big for you, but maybe for your birthday you might receive something special. ”

With great anticipation,Olga waited for her special day pictured herself strutting in those beautiful stilletos.

Finally the day arrived.

Olga opened her present to find a pair of white sparkly Mary Janes! Although they weren’t the stilettos she saw in the window, Olga stepped into her Mary Janes and soaked in how it made her feel. Glorious!!

So every birthday, Olga would ask for a new pair of shoes, and every year, her mother would present her with a new fancy pair. Sometimes, when something bad happened, Olga’s mother would take her shoe shopping to cheer her up. Sometimes they shopped just for fun. And every time Olga wore a new pair of shoes, she felt Glorious!

Time passed and Olga grew to an age where she moved out on her own. She was doing well enough for herself that she could afford help at her house, so Olga hired a gentlemen who would be her Faithful servant. By this time she had acquired tens of pairs of shoes and even had an additional closet built just so she could store them.

At night after returning from a hard day’s work, she would troll the internet looking for different kinds of shoes: Dior pumps, Gucci loafers, Givenchy sandals, Nikes, Easy Spirits?, Kate Spade heels, Uggs… ah the glory! The more varied the better! And she quickly ordered them online and her Faithful servant stored them for her in her closets.

One day as she was bustling about the house, her Faithful servant stopped her.
“Miss,” he says with a frown, ” There is no more room for your shoes.”

What?! She cried. No more room!

“I believe I can create more space in your closets, but I will need help if I am to store them any more. Here is my twin Just as Faithful servant. He can help me.”

And so, relieved, she returned to her life of busy work and shoes and thought nothing more of it. From time to time she received a notice of being overdrawn in her account. But she tossed those on the counter, for there was always another paycheck coming to make up the difference.

After many months of ordering new and wonderful shoes, after experiencing the thrill of wearing a new pair each day, Olga faced her next dilemma: She was out of closet space, for good this time.

With money now tight from all her shoe purchases, she had to make a decision…

Just put them in the hallways! She requested of her Faithful and Just as Faithful servants.

I cannot stop how Glorious it makes me feel to wear my new shoes!

And so her Faithful and Just as Faithful servants, began carting the boxes and boxes of leather boots and glittered sandals, herringbone wedge shoes and flip flops with feathers into the hallways, spilling into the other rooms of the house. Sweating and out of breath the servants sat, unable to keep up with the mountains and hills of shoes!

One crisp fall afternoon, Olga returned to her home to find her servants sitting on her front step with downcast faces.

What’s the matter?! she cries.

Her Faithful servant handed her a small piece of tear stained wrinkled paper. Olga looked down in surprise at the small piece of folded fibers. She slowly unfolded the sides and opened the full spread of the note.

Inside, the note it simply read: ACCOUNT OVERDRAWN. PROPERTY FORECLOSED.

And Olga, with tears in her eyes, sat down with her Faithful and Just as Faithful servants in silence, for there was nothing to say. Everything had come to a complete stop and her life as she knew it was over.

THE END

This little story mimics what we do with sugar. We learn as small children that sugar is a reward. It makes us feel good, temporarily, and is a staple to any birthday celebration. Our faithful servant is our hormone insulin, who’s main purpose is store away sugar in our liver and muscles. When we continue to add and add and add sugars and carbohydrates to our bodies, insulin has to recruit more twins to help shovel and pack away the sugar we are giving it. Once our liver and muscle cells can’t take any more sugar to store, insulin cannot do its job and our sugars spill out into our blood stream, making our blood sugars rise. When the overflow of sugar becomes so great, we are diagnosed with diabetes and life as we knew it is over. Our body will never act the way it did.

We are currently experiencing an EPIDEMIC of pre-diabetes and diabetes diagnoses. And this epidemic is reaching younger and younger. This disease (Type 2 Diabetes) is 100% preventable.

The solution is simple: intense exercise and a lean protein high vegetable and fruit diet.

It’s not easy, but it is simple.

What we do at my gym is become a lifeboat for people in this ocean of cultural sickness. Pass this along to someone who might need it. And let them know there is hope! We are here to help.

Keep moving!
