Stray From the Swarm

The swarm is your people. It’s your group. The group that meets at the same church each week. Heads toward the same restaurants. The same bars. Shops at the same stores. Involved with the same organizations or clubs.

It’s your buzz. Where you spend regular time with the same group of people. And each swarm has its home, just like a hive. The majority of the swarm will stay at the hive, doing “the swarm routine”.  In the fitness world, the swarm routine looks like this:

– Taking the same class, with the same routine, every week.
– Running the same distance and route every time.
– Performing the same order of exercises, at the same weight, for the same muscle groups.
– Swimming the same number of laps at the usual speed.
– Completing the same warm up exercises, punching in the same treadmill settings, with the same distance or time.

As good as a consistent routine is… it can be boring!! That’s when it’s time to stray from the swarm and try something new.

Symptoms of Needing to Stray:

– You can do the class routine or route on autopilot.
– Your muscles aren’t showing normal signs of use, like some soreness.
– You’ve stalled progress toward your goals.
– You’re bored and dread doing “the routine”.

When this is the case, here are ways you can change it up:

– Sign Up for a one-time event, like a Mud Run or Obstacle Course Race and get out and try something different.
– Book a Personal Training Session to create a new routine or try new exercises.
– Try a new class format or take a class from a different coach: We offer  CrossFit and Bootcamp  and Yoga.
– Join a short-term specialty course. Throughout the year at our gym we offer several options from  Core Conditioning to Couch to 5K to our Beast Barbell Club.

Being a part of your swarm is a good thing. But sometimes, you just need to get out and collect something sweet in a new place. That way when you return back to the hive you have something to talk about and a fresh outlook on your fitness.

 Keep moving!
