Meet Raegan, a selfless youth counselor who found herself struggling to stay active, climb stairs and balance properly after a serious bicycle accident. Read how she trained to overcome her injury and watch her take her first bike ride after 2 years of being unable.

I am a mental health counselor that works in a private practice and also at a mental health hospital here in Ocala. My family includes an old dachshund and a therapy pig. I had never really been active and was very overweight. 2008 was the 10th anniversary of my mother’s death. The doctors were telling me if I didn’t make changes I would follow her to an early grave. So that was the year I made life changes! It has been a roller coaster and I have tried many different exercises to stay active. In 2013 I had a bike accident and went head first into a cement wall. This resulted in a minor traumatic brain injury. I lost the ability to balance, depth perception, some short term memory loss, as well as other challenges. The hardest part of having the brain injury was I lost the ability to ride a bike! I wasn’t able to balance or tell differences in the surface to ride.

I chose to try Blue Wave in search of something new. The first time I tried it I loved the experience and the personal challenge training at Blue Wave provided. I did truly question if I could do it because of the limits I had with the brain injury. I never thought it would help my injuries. Boy was I wrong. The coaches took time with me and educated me how to safely do the workouts. I’ve been at Blue Wave for over a year now. In that time I have accomplished things I never thought I would be able to do again! I am able to catch a ball, walk up steps without holding on to the rail, and many other things I wasn’t able to do because of the brain injury. Cross training has challenged and help me work through my struggles. It has allowed me to make many improvements in my personal life. The best result from cross training is that I am able to ride my bike again! My next goal in training at Blue Wave is to be able to do a prescribed height box jump and see what else my body is able to do.

Small group training is a workout that challenges an individual where they are but allows them to work out in a social environment. If anyone is considering trying this type of training my recommendation is “Just do it!” I can’t truly explain to you in words what the experience is like but it’s worth it. Everyone has their own challenges in life and this type of training pushes you through them. For me a favorite part of training at Blue Wave is the workouts are always different and it challenges me to do things I have never done before. If anyone is considering trying it and would like someone to go with, I would love to go to a workout with you. This small group training has definitely changed my life and I would like to see similar results for you!
