Pressing Through the Process of Growth

Kermit the Frog once sang “It’s Not Easy Being Green” in reference to his color compared to others. One line he sings, “But green is the color of spring, and green can be cool and friendly,” and it reminds us of the change of seasons, the breath of fresh air as spring arrives to warm the winter and when new growth abounds.

And so it is with us.

This spring we experienced the process of growth through the expansion of our gym. This is our first major venture into the “other side” of the wall; literally, into the space next to the one we currently occupy. And as I can anticipate a larger overhead, a new space to outfit, the need for more coaches, and new opportunities to reach others, I have had to jump in with both feet into the process of growing, figuratively and literally.

We aren’t finished yet with all the work, but I have already gleaned meaningful lessons from this process and am passing them on to you in hopes of helping you get through your next season of growth.

I guess I should say that first you have to agree to grow. Agree to commit to the process. Sometimes it is forced upon you like an unexpected job change or life change and sometimes you decide it’s time for a change. Either way, embrace the fact that you are entering a growing season, and like all new things, it will surprise you.

Expect this season to take A LOT of energy out of you. You aren’t in coast mode. Instead, the seeds that have been sown into your field of life are springing forth, forming new shoots and consuming a lot of nutrients- that means you’re going to be tired!! During our expansion I have had more than I can accomplish on my list each day. My mantra is “work through the important things first and keep pushing forward!”

There is no free ride during your growth; you will need to create the momentum and keep the momentum going to make progress.

Sometimes you can’t see the details BEFORE you need to act. You are heading into unknown territory. You know where you want to end up, but the path to that destination will take unexpected turns and dips and if you worry too much about all the little details you will become discouraged to continue. Just take the next step.

Sometimes you will look like an idiot. Don’t beat yourself up about it too much. Training for something new will look awkward and clumsy at first, but over time what was new and foreign will look familiar and blend in with the rest. When I was first a trainer, I didn’t know how hard to push my clients. Sometimes I really blew it and was too easy on them or had them running for the toilet. That skill took time and so will yours.

Changing requires RISK, and you will have to take some risk BEFORE you see the changes you desire. Be committed to the outcome and act upon that commitment.

There will be days you will want to quit. It doesn’t mean you are finished and the growth has ended. On those days, see it as a sign that you need to take a break, step back and remind yourself why you’re doing this in the first place. Take a respite and refresh and recommit.

Working a little harder doesn’t hurt that much more. Finish what you planned to accomplish, even if you have to push through at the end. The feeling of completion will more than outweigh the seeming insurmountable effort required to get it done.

Lastly, celebrate your small successes along the way! You need to enjoy what progress you’re making. If you goal is to lose 100 pounds, celebrate when you lose 5 pounds. When you lose 30 pounds. When you lose 50 pounds. All the little things along the way. They will encourage you to keep going, when you feel like you’re in a free fall and sliding down your slope of intentions.

Thankfully the growth season doesn’t last forever. And when it does end, you will have expanded your knowledge, your experience, you’ll become a different (and better!) person. You’ll see things differently and appreciate more. And you’ll settle into a new season to enjoy what you’ve accomplished.

Just keep moving,
Priscilla
