Exercise and the Golden Goose

In Aesop’s fable “The Goose and the Golden Eggs” a man owns a goose who supplies him with one golden egg each day. This man grows rich selling his golden eggs, but over time he becomes greedy about his lack of daily supply. Losing his patience, he decides to kill his goose so that he can gather all the eggs at once. To his chagrin, he finds once the goose is dead, there are no golden eggs to be found. His precious supply of great means has vanished. The moral to the story? Take care of your golden goose and it will keep producing.

A friend once told me that we are the golden goose. And every day we get 24 golden hours to spend. Nothing more and nothing less. If we keep the golden goose healthy, we will continue the production of golden eggs. If we strangle it to death, we will produce nothing.

In days past, the pace of life was slower and more active. Everyday people didn’t go to a gym, they were already at their gym, on the land, doing their work. Today, while some jobs still have activity built into them, the majority of what we do for a living is not like what it once was. We have forklifts to do the heavy lifting, cars to transport us, chairs to sit in all day, and we can do more now than ever with a swipe of our finger on the phone.

But our bodies were designed to move.

Unfortunately for us, because what we do each day doesn’t keep our bodies healthy, we have to create time, we have to be intentional, about taking care of it. Taking care of our golden goose. Especially if we want to extend the quality of our life as we get older.

The good news is that every time you invest in yourself, you are priming yourself to produce more golden eggs. The time you spend planning healthy meals, saying “No” to unhealthy situations, and getting your exercise in, all prepare you to continue what you do now, and even better.

And honestly, whether you love to exercise or eat nutritiously does not have to be part of the equation. You don’t have to love it, enjoy it, or even look forward to it. You do it because you know it makes you better in every role you play each day:

A better wife. A better mother. A better co-worker. A better role model. A better friend, sister, daughter, and any other role you play.

Exercise and eating, on some level, is a means to an end. Your golden goose end. If you enjoy it, I call that gravy. And we love gravy at our gym! But it doesn’t have to be a deal breaker. Some days you just need to show up and let the process of exercising run its course with the peace of mind that you are taking care of yourself.

So, I challenge you today to do ONE thing that will take better care of yourself. Write it, type it, print it, post it, but commit to doing ONE thing that will refresh and recharge you.

If you are unsure how to work-in your golden goose time, reach out to me. Every week, I meet with ladies for a free consultations. We talk about what life looks like now, where you want to go and how to make it work.

In the meantime, Keep moving!
