Here in Florida, bathing suit season is just around the corner. That fact could exhilarate you or make your cringe depending on how you feel about it.  And whether you’ll find yourself pool-side often or shunning the idea of wearing a bathing suit,  you’ll be facing ” the shorts and a tank top” season for the next 6 months of the year. A few decades ago, that WAS a bathing suit. So, since we are all effected by bathing suit season, for better for worse, why not make it our best?!

Looking and feeling your best starts from the inside out. Taking care of what’s inside will translate to looking great on the outside. Just feeling confident can do wonders for your image. You don’t have to have perfect measurements to look great. (Thank goodness! And who came up with those anyway?) Remove the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover from your mind. We are talking about making the best of what God gave you and being the hottest you, you can be!

If you are motivated by the thought of getting into your bathing suit, here are some great ways to make Spring 2016 your best season yet…

1-Shed the winter weight. If you put on a few pounds during the winter season, let’s work to take them back off. You won’t have time for a major weight loss before it’s time to wear your suit, so don’t put a huge monkey on your back that you have to lose 50 pounds in order to get into your suit. Just focus on 5-10 pounds and you’ll feel successful when you make your swimming pool debut. The best way to do this is clean up your diet. That means fresh, unprocessed foods. Making the “meat” of your diet FREE of fast food, drive-thru junk, empty carbs and sugary foods. This can be quite a struggle in our fast-paced American culture, so add some structure in your diet for the next 8 weeks. Check out these programs to find one that suits you: Trim Healthy Mama, The Zone Diet, and  The Daniel Plan.

2-Tone up. Let’s show off some of your curves or muscles (depending on the look you want). Join a 6-10 week exercise program or find a workout buddy. Either of these will give you the support you need to keep going when you want to quit. Two great programs are Couch to 5K or 10K and On Ramp to CrossFit. Both of these gradually increase in difficulty as your progress and change enough to keep you interested.

3- Play Up Your Strengths. Choose a good bathing suit that shows off your best features (or covers your not so best). It’s AMAZING the difference when you’re wearing a bathing suit that flatters you vs. the one you found on clearance on the J. Crew site (even if they are awesome). Colors matter too. I can rarely pull off orange or light yellow. I once donned a white bathing suit and felt the need to apologize to everyone for ruining their view.  Don’t let that be you. Find colors that work for you. Here you can also find what bathing suit styles flatter you.

4- Hydration. Hydration. Hydration. I can’t say this enough. Eight glasses of water a day for ladies. Ten for men.

5- Take a Vitamin E with Biotin supplement. This will give your hair, skin and nails the extra nutrition it needs before hitting the beach. It will also help your body repair from too much sun exposure. Nature Valley’s  my favorite.

6- Buy a new lotion that you like. It’s best to moisturize from the inside out, but I know my legs definitely look better with a little lotion on them. A little lotion can go a long way and you can find ones that have tanning accelerators or sunscreen in them. Discover your favorite here.

Emergency fix! OK as a professional trainer I do not endorse this kind of living on a regular basis, BUT, in the emergency situation:  i.e. you are a brides maid in an outside wedding and need to fit into the spaghetti strap dress and you have one week, this is what you do: Hit the tanning bed 2-3 times (low time amounts if you’re fair), drop your carbs to a minimum (the body will drop 3- 7 pounds in water from this), drink LOTS of water (at least what’s listed above)  and take a really good multivitamin. This isn’t a miracle worker, but it will take away your bloated look and give you a little color so you don’t have to apologize to everyone for ruining their view.

To help you get started with Tip #1, I’m offering some FREE Pilates classes at my place in the month of March. The sun is out and what’s better bathing suit preparation than doing some toning, stretching and strengthening exercises for the midsection? Plus get a little vitamin D in the process. Don’t worry, I won’t wear white. 🙂 Click here to find out more and join me.
